For several years now, I've been traveling to Ghana in West Africa, where I've developed meaningful relationships with artisans in the Art Village located in Accra. This vibrant community inspired the creation of the skirts and palazzo pants we proudly carry at my store, The Ginger House. My journey began when I stumbled upon a beautiful piece of fabric while shopping for baskets in the Art Village. I brought it home with the intention of having a skirt made for myself, but it quickly became clear that I had enough fabric to create skirts for my sisters and those who work at my store.

The response was overwhelming; everyone loved them and wanted one for themselves. That's when I started collaborating with a young man named Alex from the village. I went through several iterations of the design, ultimately adding an elastic waistband for comfort and versatility in sizing. The classic tie at the waistband gives these pieces a timeless appeal. The same thoughtful design approach applies to the palazzo pants.

The colors and designs used in Ghanaian fabrics are incredibly significant, rich with  both color and symbolism. Large circular patterns often represent water tanks, emphasizing the importance of water as a vital resource in their community and its scarcity. Other designs depict medicinal herbs and various water-related themes, reflecting the deep connection the community has with nature. Most of the artisans in these villages are women, working diligently to supplement their families' income in farming communities challenged by difficult soil conditions.

In addition, I have created a "GiveBack" program where proceeds from sales are returned to help those in the village with necessities. I take great care in hand-selecting fabrics and collaborating with skilled seamstresses to bring my designs to life. Afterward, these beautiful creations are shipped, making their way from Ghana to my store in Door County, Wisconsin—a journey filled with passion and craftsmanship.

Each piece is not just a garment; it's a story woven into the fabric, representing the hands that created it and the distance it traveled to become a unique addition to your wardrobe. These timeless pieces are perfect for dressing up or keeping casual, and they are incredibly comfortable, fitting most sizes.
